What are energy-saving light bulbs?
LED light bulbs are now considered the most energy-efficient lighting solution as they use the least energy and light up instantly with no warm-up time required. Also, lasting up to 10 times longer than a standard incandescent (traditional) light bulb, you save money on replacing the bulb.
Some lights are also available as LED integrated, meaning the light source is physically built into the light, so there is no need to add a bulb. LED integrated lights often last longer than screw-in bulbs and have an extended guarantee.
Can you put an LED energy-saving bulb in a regular light fixture?
Most lights are compatible with LED energy-saving light bulbs. They are available in several common fittings:
- Screw In: Known as Edison Screw Cap (ES or E27).
- Small Screw In: Known as Small Edison Screw (SES or E14).
- Twist In: Known as Bayonet Cap (BC or B22).
- Spotlights: GU10 bulbs for spotlights and recessed downlights.
- Modern/Discreet: G9 bulbs, which are much smaller and more discreet for contemporary fixtures.
Choosing a dimmable light bulb
There is no guarantee that a certain energy-saving bulb will work with a certain dimmer. Incompatibilities between bulbs and dimmers can cause flickering, reduce dimming ranges, and even cause damage and reduce the lamp's life span.
We recommend you show your electrician your bulbs before purchasing an LED dimmer to ensure they are compatible. LED bulbs don't generally dim as smoothly as traditional bulbs; however, the benefits of LED energy-saving light bulbs outweigh the negatives.
